Cause of Death
An Arizona boy died after two watercraft collided at a state park in Utah, officials said Wednesday. A father and two children on one vessel were thrown into the water during the collision, officials said.
Bystanders on the beach witnessed the collision and helped bring the injured father and two children to shore. The witnesses performed first aid and CPR until first responders arrived and rushed the three victims to Dixie Regional Medical Center.
Law, of Chandler, Ariz., died a day after the accident. The father and second child suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
The circumstances leading to the collision were not immediately clear. Parks officials said the incident remains under investigation.
The accident injured a father and his two sons, who are 11 and 8 years old. All were wearing life jackets.
Witnesses found the father unconscious in the water and quickly pulled the group inside their boat, performing CPR on the most critically-injured, the 11-year-old boy who suffered life-threatening head and back injuries.
Park rangers arrived within minutes and rendered additional aid. Hurricane Medical took all three to the hospital. As of Tuesday afternoon, the father and 11-year-old son remain in the hospital. The 8-year-old boy was treated and released.
The cause of this accident is currently under investigation. It’s unclear at this point how many individuals were on the other WaveRunner and how quickly it was driving.
Although the state park has seen record-breaking visitation this summer, rangers said there were only 5 to 6 boast on the lake at the time of the accident. Staff ask that any water-crafts stay at least 150 feet apart.
Authorities are investigating an accident involving two WaveRunners at Sand Hollow State Park that left an 11-year-old boy fighting for his life and sent his father and younger brother to the hospital.
Utah State Park Rangers received a 911 call at approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday with screaming in the background and a report of a possible drowning approximately a half-mile east of the rental shop on the south beach, according to park manager Jonathan Hunt.
Hunt tells ABC4 News all individuals involved in the accident knew each other and were spending the day out on the lake while vacationing from Arizona when two WaveRunners, both with adult male drivers and younger kids on board, crashed into each other.
“Luckily we had some people on shore that heard screaming for help,” Hunt said. “They were able to launch their boat and get out to them quickly, giving them initial first aid.”
“It’s kind of your case of a rear-ending but on a boat, where one vehicle slows down and the other does not,” Hunt added. “They ended up colliding.”
