“[Alkilani] said [the exhibition] violated school rules. He was swearing too, ”Nathaniel Hope, a member of the university’s College Republicans, told the conservative youth organization Young America’s Foundation.

Images posted by YAF on Twitter condemned Alkilani’s behavior as “despicable.”

But Alkilani, vice president of finance for the university’s Student Union, defended his actions, saying his protest was to draw attention to the rise of Islamophobia and criticize US military intervention in the Middle East.

“Any September 11 memorial that does not address these events is not only incomplete but also amplifies pro-imperialist sentiment and does not actively respect those who have died as a result of the US invasion,” he said in a statement.

“A monument that uses US flags is especially insidious, as it does not recognize the fallen, but uses a symbol that was on the shoulders of those responsible for the deaths of 900,000 people, and uses the innocent lives lost during 9/11. as political support that defends US hegemony.

He added that the victims of September 11 “deserve better than to be used as a political tool by those seeking to excuse US imperialism and Islamophobia.

“They died for no reason, suddenly and traumatically, and they should be grieved, not by political symbols, but by their names and faces. I also want to extend my condolences to all those who have been killed and injured, both American and non-American, since 9/11, ”he said.

School officials, however, said they were “disappointed” to learn of the incident.

“We were disappointed to learn of the interruption of the 9/11 exhibit at Mudd Field. We condemn the interference in the expression of support by Republican college students for the victims of the national tragedy that took place 20 years ago today, ”Executive Director Susan McGinn said in a statement.

He continued: “We value freedom of expression in all its forms and will work to ensure that all students can express their views through the proper channels without disrupting the rights of others to show support for causes that matter to them.”.
