Mauled to Death by Pit Bulls
Kavay Louis-Calderon was attacked Sunday morning while her uncle was taking care of her. “This is a nightmare they’re going through,” Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett said of Kavay Louis-Calderon’s family, reports WJW. “They are destroyed by this, they are absolutely destroyed by this. No one wanted this to happen to this child.”
According to authorities, Kavay’s uncle was taking care of her when she had an argument with an acquaintance on the house’s closed front porch.
“The girl was left inside the house with the two family pets and as this disturbance, fight, was taking place outside, it is believed that the dogs reacted and directed their aggression at this beautiful 16-month-old girl,” Mylett said. WJW reports.
Neighbors who witnessed the incident told WKYC that they will never forget what they saw.
“That’s what I can’t get out of my head: the screaming of her and the 911 operator pulling that baby out,” said neighbor Richard Turner. “That will always be with me.”
Kavay was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, reports the Akron Beacon Journal. She did not live in the house where the attack occurred.
This is not the first time that dogs have been violent. Neighbors say the couple had attacked the postman over the summer.
“He bit it bad,” said Jerry Smith, reports WKYC. “He bit his hand, he bit his leg. They [did nothing] about it, but they don’t deliver mail there anymore.”

Turner added: “I didn’t let my grandchildren play outside just because I didn’t know if the dogs were in the house.”
It is unclear if criminal charges will be filed.
“I’m reluctant to blame or hold anyone accountable at this point,” Mylett said. “At this point, the family is mourning the loss of a 16-month-old baby. But rest assured that we will get to the bottom of what happened.”
Since then, the dogs have been confiscated.
