Lee “Scratch” Perry was a Bob Marley producer, the reggae and dub icon is dead. The legendary Jamaican record producer and singer took his last breath at the Noel Holmes Hospital in Lucea, Jamaica. The late Grammy-winning singer whose real name is Rainford Hugh Perry OD.
He was a Jamaican singer and record producer known for his innovative studio techniques and production style. Perry was a pioneer in the development of dub music in the 1970s with his early adoption of remixes and studio effects to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. He worked and produced for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, The Congos, Max Romeo, Adrian Sherwood, Beastie Boys, Ari Up, The Clash, The Orb, and many others.


Lee “Scratch” Perry has died at the age of 85-years-old.

Wife & Children

Perry resided in Switzerland with his wife Mireille and their two children. He had four other children by the names of Cleopatra Perry, Marsha Perry, Omar Perry, and Marvin (Sean) Perry in various parts of the world.

Perry first married Paulette Perry before separating in 1979. The singer-songwriter later married a businesswoman named Mireille Campbell-Ruegg. Perry previously resided in Switzerland with Ruegg and his two children before moving to Jamaica in 2020. He met his second wife in 1989. The singer generally had six children. The other four are identified as Cleopatra Perry, Marsha Perry, Omar Perry, and Marvin (Sean) Perry.

Music Career

Speaking of his music career, Perry started out as an assistant on a reggae music label in the 1950s before becoming a recording artist with the same label. In his decorated career spanning seven decades, the singer worked with music legends such as Bob Marley and the Beastie Boys. While Marley was known as the face of reggae music, Perry became famous as the soul of the genre. Speaking in a 1984 interview with NME magazine, he said: “My father worked on the road, my mother in the fields. We were very poor. I went to school … I learned nothing at all. Everything I have learned has come from nature ”, as reported by the BBC.

Perry died on August 29, 2021, at a hospital in Lucea, Jamaica, of an unspecified illness, at the age of 85.
