Max Mosley was a Former FIA president and Formula 1 figurehead Max Mosley has passed away. As well as his years serving at the top of the motorsport world, Mr. Mosley was known for his campaigning efforts to strengthen press regulation.

He famously took the News Of The World to court in 2008 after the newspaper printed allegations about his private life, successfully suing its publisher after it wrongly reported he had attended a “Nazi-themed” sex party. He later gave financial backing to the court costs of claimants in newspaper phone-hacking cases.

Born in London on 13 April 1940, Mr. Mosley was the youngest son of 1930s British fascist leader Sir Oswald Mosley.

He was a racing driver and a lawyer before becoming president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body for Formula One, in 1993.


Max Mosley has died at the age of 81-years-old.


His career in motor racing as an amateur driver, was an outspoken president of the FIA, the sport’s governing body. He became FIA president in 1993 after serving in previous administrative roles in motorsport, including within Formula One. He served three terms as president before standing down in 2009.

After 2008, when stories about his sex life appeared in the British press, along with unfounded allegations regarding Nazi connotations, he became a high-profile campaigner for strict press controls.

Bernie Ecclestone, former CEO of the Formula One group and Mosley’s former business partner, confirmed the news to BBC Sport. “It’s like losing family, like losing a brother, Max and I,” he said. “He did a lot of good things not just for motorsport, also the industry. He was very good at making sure people built cars that we’re safe.”


Mosley was the youngest son of Oswald Mosley, former leader of the British Union of Fascists, and Diana Mitford.

The former racing driver chief was president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and was one of the sport’s most notable individuals.

Mosley, whose father Oswald was the figurehead of the British fascist movement, was a barrister and amateur racing driver.

He later put millions into calls for stricter press controls after the News of the World filmed him at an orgy with five sex workers.

A five-hour recording of the incident showed the millionaire surrounded by escorts in military gear performing sadistic sexual acts.

However, a judge ruled in favor of the motorsport tycoon that there was no Nazi element to the orgy, as the newspaper had previously claimed. The judge also found the story was not in the public interest.

Cause of Death

Former Formula One boss and privacy campaigner Max Mosley has died aged 81. Ex-F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone made the announcement, saying he died on Sunday. “He died last night,” Mr. Ecclestone said. “He was like family to me. We were like brothers. I am pleased in a way because he suffered for too long.”
