Peter Bogdanovich was an American film director, writer, actor, producer, critic, and historian who passed away. Bogdanovich, one of the directors of “New Hollywood”, began as a film journalist until he was hired to work on Roger Corman’s The Wild Angels (1966). Following the success of that film, he directed his own film Targets (1968), a critical success. He later gained major popularity for his critically acclaimed drama The Last Picture Show (1971), which garnered eight Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Early Life

Bogdanovich was born in Kingston, New York, the son of Herma (née Robinson, 1918-1979) and Borislav Bogdanovich (1899-1970), a Serbian painter and pianist. His Austrian-born mother was Jewish; his father was a Serbian Orthodox Christian; the two came to the United States in May 1939. He graduated from the Collegiate School in New York City in 1957 and studied acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory. He was fluent in Serbian, having learned it before English.

Cause of Death

Oscar-nominated director Peter Bogdanovich, who was one of the directors of ‘New Hollywood’ and a star on The Sopranos, has died at his home in Los Angeles at age 82.

Peter’s daughter, Antonia Bogdanovich, confirmed the news that the director of The Last Picture Show had passed away.

The two-time Oscar nominee was seen as a bridge between Old Hollywood and New Hollywood more than anyone else with Paper Moon, What’s Up, Doc ?, Targets, Saint Jack, Daisy Miller, and At Long Last Love among his credits.

He also appeared on camera, with his most famous role in The Sopranos as Dr. Elliot Kupferberg, the therapist of Tony Soprano’s own psychologist, Dr. Melfi.
