An Oberlin College student was unleashed when “cisgender men” were hired to repair a radiator in a dormitory on campus. It all started when student Peter Fray-Witzer wrote an opinion piece for the university newspaper, the Oberlin Review. The headline read: “Male Workers Admitted to Baldwin, Disturbing Residents.”

In the op-ed, Fray-Witzer complained about receiving an email from Josh Matos, the area coordinator for Identity-Based and Multicultural Communities. The Matos email informed residents that contractors would enter the rooms to install a radiator on October 8. “This will mean that they will be in your room for a period of time to complete the job,” Matos wrote.

“In general, I am very reluctant for people to enter my personal space. This anxiety was compounded by the fact that the crew would be unfamiliar and more than likely to be cisgender men, “wrote Fray-Witzer, noting that Baldwin is” the home of the collective of women and trans. ”

Friar-Witzer wrote: “I was angry, scared and confused. Why didn’t the College complete the installation during the summer, when the building was empty? Why couldn’t they tell us precisely when the workers would be there? Why were we only notified the day before the installation started? ”

Fray-Witzer continued, “The next day, I waited apprehensively. The workers began to install in common spaces, and I could see immediately that they were all men. It was clear that the College had not made a special request for male workers not to enter the upper floors of Baldwin. ”

Fray-Witzer applied for an exemption for the radiator installation but was denied. “A significant portion of students choose to live at Baldwin because they are victims of sexual assault or abuse, have suffered invasions of privacy in the past, or have some other reason to fear cisgender men,” wrote Fray-Witzer. “… But why not finish the project during the four months of the summer semester, when the building was vacant? Why not alert us before the intrusion? Why didn’t the university make a schedule detailing when workers are likely to arrive in each dormitory and each room? They should have taken steps to keep students comfortable and safe, especially those who chose to live in a specifically designated safe space. ”

Friar-Witzer has written several other columns for the Oberlin Review. Fray-Witzer was once described as an environmental and social justice podcaster.
