Asiah’s Great-Grandmother
Asiah’s great-grandmother, Susie Whitley, told WBTV that he and other relatives were staying at her home when the shots rang out.
“At first I thought, I thought I had heard gunshots, but I really didn’t know,” she told the station. “But then when I heard the knock on the door, I knew someone was shooting at my house.”
Whitley then called 911 when her granddaughter screamed that Asiah had been shot.
“I didn’t want to believe it,” Whitley said.
Whitley told WSOC that he believes the gunmen were trying to kill everyone inside the home.
“These people need to be caught and taken off the street because they keep shooting at people’s houses,” said his great-grandmother.

Asiah was hit by gunfire and later died in a hospital. Her 4-year-old sister was also beaten, but she is expected to survive, police said.
Asiah, who was turning 4 in December, was a kind boy who loved to play games on his iPad, Whitley said.
Neighbors, meanwhile, said they heard Asiah’s mother screaming after the shooting.
“The worst sound I ever heard was the bloodcurdling screams of the mother who had just lost her son,” Abdul Khan told WBTV. “It’s scary, it’s almost surreal.”
Investigation
Investigators posted two videos of the suspects arriving at the home in hopes of getting help from the public in identifying them. Detectives believe the incident is related to several other shootings that resulted in two homicides.
“The information also indicates that the series of shootings has something to do with Hopewell High School students, and detectives believe a student from North Mecklenburg and Chambers (Vance) High Schools is involved,” police said in a statement.
The murder of the boy should “outrage everyone,” Capt. Joel McNelly told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday.
