Leonard Hubbard was also known simply as Hub, has died. He was an American musician best known for being the bassist for The Roots, a Philadelphia band, from 1992 to 2007. He played on all of their records until his departure from the group, including 1999’s Things Fall Apart and 2004’s The Tipping. Period. He is known for always having a chew stick in his mouth, both on and off stage. Hubbard studied at Settlement Music School during his youth in Philadelphia, then went on to study classical upright bass at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Hub played his last show with The Roots on August 31, 2007.

One of the co-founders of the hip hop band The Roots, Leonard ‘Hub’ Hubbard, has died at the age of 62. He died from multiple myeloma on December 16, 2021, at the age of 62.
The musician appeared on the band’s first seven albums.
His death was confirmed by his wife Stephanie, who said that she had been battling cancer for several years.
A tribute to the star was also posted on The Roots’ official Twitter page. Along with an image of Hub, the post read: “It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to our brother Leonard Nelson Hubbard.
“May your transition bring peace to your family, your friends, your fans, and everyone who loved you. Rest at Melody Hub.”
Fans of the musician also flocked to social media to post condolences after the news.
One user wrote: “I’ve known Hub since we were kids in school. He was an amazing classmate and friend. He was a phenomenal musician and I have fond memories of him playing in his band called Bittersweet at our prom.
“We were so proud when he became a member of the Roots! Rest well!”
Another commented: “The rhythm of the sky just landed a little more in your pocket.
“We never met, but the first lines I learned from playing bass were his on Phren, TFA, Illadelph, and DYWM. I play because of him. Without even knowing how calm a cat was, he influenced my life path a lot. . Man. RIP “.
A third said, “Ouch. Man, Hub was the coolest bass player in the world every time The Roots played. Rest in Power.”
Hub was part of the Philadelphia group from 1992 to 2007. The band currently plays as the house band for The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
He left the band after a cancer diagnosis. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and, after his departure from the band, he still met with them on several occasions.

Despite his long battle, his wife Stephanie told ABC6 that his death was swift after he was hospitalized on Wednesday.
She said: “He passed quickly. He did not suffer much.”
The Roots released their debut LP Organix in 1993. Hub’s last recording involvement with the band was their 2006 album Game Theory.
However, in 2016 he sued his former teammates after stating that “they did not pay him for a contract that allegedly made him a co-owner of the band.”
