Lyra McKee was a journalist from Northern Ireland who wrote for various publications about the aftermath of the Troubles, she has passed away. She also served as an editor for Mediagazer, a news aggregation website. On April 18, 2019, McKee was fatally shot during riots in the Creggan area of Derry.

McKee was born on March 31, 1990, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His interest in journalism began at age fourteen when he was writing for the school newspaper at St Gemma’s High School. The following year, he joined Children’s Express (soon to be renamed Headliners), a charity that supports young people by helping them develop journalistic skills, and as a result, he received the Young Journalist Award from Sky News in 2006. He studied journalism online at Birmingham City University under Paul Bradshaw, pursuing a Master of Arts but did not graduate. He posthumously earned a master’s degree in online journalism in January 2020; her sister, Nichola Corner, accepted the title on her behalf.


Lyra McKee has died at the age of 29-years-old.

Cause of Death

On April 18, 2019, McKee was shot during rioting in the Creggan area of ​​Derry, Northern Ireland. The violence erupted after police raids on dissidents with the aim of seizing ammunition ahead of the Easter Uprising commemorative parades that will take place in the area that weekend. She is survived by her partner, her mother, two brothers, and three sisters.

Four Men Arrested in Connection of Her Death

Detectives investigating the death of journalist Lyra McKee in Londonderry have arrested four men. The men, ages 19, 20, 21, and 33, were arrested Wednesday under the Terrorism Act, police said.

McKee, 29, was shot while she was observing riots at Derry’s Creggan estate in April 2019. One man has already been charged with murder and another man charged with rioting and associated crimes the night Ms. McKee was murdered.
